The Need for Willow’s Services

Willow exists to support young adults aged 16 to 40 who are facing life-threatening illnesses or life-limiting conditions at a time when their lives should be full of possibility. In 2025 alone, the charity aims to support 1,400 seriously ill young people, but the need far exceeds this target. Every single week, around 300 young adults in the UK are diagnosed with cancer, adding up to nearly 16,000 individuals each year whose lives are unexpectedly disrupted. Many face uncertainty, emotional strain and the loss of critical life experiences during what should be their most vibrant years. Although a cancer diagnosis in this age group is relatively uncommon, making up only 4.3 percent of all cancer cases in the UK, this very rarity often leads to profound feelings of loneliness and isolation.

In addition to those with cancer, an estimated 5,000 young adults each year become eligible for Willow’s support due to degenerative, genetic or metabolic conditions. For many of these individuals, there is very limited help available that focuses purely on quality of life. Willow steps into that gap, offering meaningful, personalised experiences that bring comfort, happiness and connection during an otherwise difficult and isolating time.
